Maryland Land Title Association Pre-Licensing Course Information

Unless you are an attorney admitted to practice before the Court of Appeals of Maryland, you are Required By Law to meet one of the 3 prerequisites prior to taking the required State of Maryland Licensing Examination to become a Title Insurance Agent:

  • Satisfactory completion of an approved 30-hour course of study offered by an approved school of course provider, or
  • Regular employment by an insurer, agent, or broker documented by a Affidavit of Employer and pre-approved by the Maryland Insurance Administration, or
  • Licensed in a companion jurisdiction for at least a year, and in possession of a letter of clearance from that jurisdiction.

The MLTA Education Committee is pleased to sponsor a 30-hour Pre-Licensing Course approved by the Maryland Insurance Administration. This mandatory program of instruction is designed to adequately prepare you for the examination. Upon successful conclusion, you will receive a Certificate of Completion qualifying you to take the licensing examination.

The course is structured as 14 hours of Classroom Instruction and 16 hours of Independent Study. To obtain a Certificate of Completion, you MUST ATTEND ALL of the required in-class sessions and successfully complete the independent study. The classroom instruction (9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) includes History of Title Insurance, Title Insurance Policy, Title Agents and Settlement, and Introduction to General Insurance. The course includes a comprehensive review of all the materials, review of practice tests, and a general discussion of any areas of concern.

The MLTA has scheduled several sessions of the pre-licensing course. You need to select only one two-day session from the following:

 All sessions are held at:
The Conference Center at the Maritime Institute
692 Maritime Boulevard
Linthicum Heights, MD 21090-1952

Examination and Licensing

Examination Reservation

Testing will begin on Wednesday, June 6, 2007. Candidates should go to:

www.psiexams.com or call: (800) 733-9267 to download/request a Candidate Information Bulletin - the CIB explains all necessary details. Because PSI is transitioning the Maryland Insurance Program, they anticipate updates and edits to the CIB during the first several weeks. Please keep checking the website for the most up to date information.

Each exam is $70, and consists of a general and state portion. (UPDATE: If you pass one part, you only have to repeat the failed portion on any subsequent exam attempts within a year of the initial attempt.)

UPDATE: PSI will accept education completion certificates via fax during the transition period through July 1, 2007. They are anticipating candidate data from the current vendor to update their records. However, candidates may also bring the education certificates or a failing score report to the test center to prove eligibility. Beginning July 1, all education providers will submit student education completion information electronically. Details will be coming soon!
